The school was originally named the Eighteenth Street School, then was renamed for the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.  The school was renamed the John C. Strother School for a local attorney and school board member in 1923.  The school was renovated and expanded in 1968 and dedicated in 1969.
