Following the closing of the George D. Prentice Elementary School, the building became the Stevens School for the Retarded in 1964 when a privately operated school under the Stevens name moved to the facility. At that time, the Louisville city schools began to offer a public class in the school where private classes for mentally retarded students were held as well. Five years later, the school's name was changed back to Prentice School and more public classes were added for the mentally handicapped.
