The building was originally constructed in 1890 and used as the Louisville Normal School. When the Normal School moved to a new building on East Broadway, the school continued as an elementary and was named for Hiram Roberts, a former principal of the Normal School.  Special classes for students with special needs were added in 1916.  The school was closed in 1966. Part of its student body went to Lincoln Elementary and the other part to Carmichael Elementary.  For six years thereafter, the school handled overflow students from other schools.  It was sold to the Charles A. Koch Glass Company in 1972.  It is now the site of Joe Ley Antiques and its address is now 620 East Market Street.
