The name of the Fifth Ward School became the Seventh Ward School after the Civil War, when redistricting in Louisville changed ward locations. The school was renamed yet again in 1900 to the Monsarrat School in honor of Laura Lucas Monsarrat, notable Louisville educator, who died while serving as the school's principal.
