Schaffner Pre-school opened as a regional kindergarten in the former Schaffner Elementary School building in 1988.  Kindergartens at Cane Run, Crums Lane, Frayser, Hazelwood, Kerrick, Mill Creek, Semple, and Wellington were consolidated into the regional school.  Prior to its opening as a preschool, Schaffner Annex was an administrative building housing Library Media Services and  Central Technical Services.  The regional kindergarten was controversial with some parents and lasted four years.  In 1992 Schaffner was reopened as a traditional elementary school.
