In 1920 the school, formerly the Duncan Street School and the 11th (Eleventh) Ward School,  was renamed Theodore Roosevelt School in honor of the former U. S. President.  Its location was 17th and Duncan streets in Portland.  In addition to the general curriculum, the school continued to serve special needs students with "retarded" and "atypical" classes.  The school was one of the founders and the original location of the Portland Museum.  The Roosevelt School was moved to the former Perry Elementary building at 1606 Magazine Street in 1980 and a new school, Roosevelt-Perry, succeeded the previous schools.  Roosevelt's old school building stood vacant for many years but was converted into apartments for low and moderate income residents in 1998.
