This was the first school in the area now served by Auburndale Elementary.  It was opened in 1868 on Strawberry Lane near Old Third Street Road, named for school trustee Fred Steedley.  The school moved to another location on East Strawberry Lane two years later.  This area was known as the "Wet Woods" and was nearly inaccessible during winter, so the school moved to Third Street in 1878.
