On August 17, 1829 a school was opened at the southwest corner of Fifth and Green Streets (now Liberty Street) in the rented upper story of the Baptist Church. The students were charged no tuition so it was the first free school established by law in Louisville and in Kentucky. The school was funded by a property tax. The school was succeeded by a new schoolhouse built at Fifth and Walnut streets.
