The school was located at the intersection of 42nd and Herman and apparently was first known as the Herman Street School.  The school was constructed with money from the city School Improvement Plan.  It succeeded a three room frame cottage on Market Street when it was opened in 1915.  The property was sold to real estate agent Clifford Turner in 1986 who converted the school building into apartments named Shawnee Gardens.  The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
