Southern Junior High School was opened on six acres of land purchased by the Louisville city schools at Ashland and Bellevue Avenues in the Beechmont neighborhood. Two years later, in 1930, additional land was purchased to add a playground and space for portable classrooms. Southern became a Leadership Academy in 2002. Southern was merged with Iroquois Middle School to form the Frederick Law Olmsted Academy in 2008. Southern became Olmsted North. Olmsted North educates boys and its other campus, Olmsted South, educates girls in single-sex classes.
