Seventh Street School's original address was Seventh and Hill streets. In 1903 its address changed to Seventh and Shipp streets. It may have been called the Shipp Street School unofficially. Louisville city school directories use the Seventh Street School name. In 1905 the school was renamed James Norton School, in honor of a member of the Louisville school board. About five years later, the school's name was changed again and it became John Marshall School, named for the famous Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court.
