The Second Ward School, opened in 1853 on Market near Wenzel Street, was used as Hospital Number 9 for soldiers during the Civil War.  Following the war, the school was renovated and returned to use as the Second Ward School.  It was renamed the Margaret Merker School in 1923 in honor of Merker, a scholar and social worker in Louisville.
