The school was previously named Twelfth Street Colored School and Wilson Street Colored School.  It was renamed in honor of George Marion McClellan, a teacher at Central High and principal at Dunbar Colored School in the early years of the 20th century, who died in 1934.  Under the McClellan name, the school was initially at 11th and Gaulbert streets.  In 1936 its location was given as 1507 S. 11th Street.  In 1939 the location was listed as 1521 S. 11th Street.  The school was at its last address from 1942 on.  The property was sold in 1956 following the school's closing.
