Kentucky Street School opened in 1886 in a three-story brick building. The school was renamed Engelhard Elementary in 1919 in memory of Victor H. Engelhard, a local businessman and member of the school board. The Louisville Deaf Oral School is now operated in the former Kentucky Street School / Engelhard building on Kentucky Street.
