Trade or vocational education began with an experimental school conducted by the Consumers League of Louisville, circa 1914.  When this proved successful, the Louisville Board of Education took it over and opened the Pre-Vocational School.   Three years later the name was changed to the Louisville Vocational School, which was succeeded by Ahrens in 1926.
