Year Opened: 1897

Kenwood School developed in the area previously served by the Steedley School and the Findley School.  It was originally located at Old Third Street Road and Strawberry Lane.  Kenwood was noted for having the first or one of the first lunchrooms and an organization which later became the first PTA in Jefferson County.  In 1916 the school moved to a four acre site on Southside Drive.  Construction of a new school was completed by T. J. Niles, father of folk singer John Jacob Niles.  In 1924 the school's name was changed to Auburndale due to the area's resemblance to Auburndale, Florida.  Auburndale moved from this building to a new school building in 1969 and this school building was destroyed by fire in 1970.
