Archives Closed Schools K-M: Liberty School #10

Other Name: Liberty - Thorne

Year Opened: 1898, prior to

Year Closed: 1922-1925

This was a one-room school in the vicinity of McNeely Park, which offered grades 1 through 8.  It may have operated in as many as three successive log schoolhouses.  Some information about the district may be found in the Brentlinger School history folder.  No link between the schools is identified.  When buses came into use, the school was closed and students were transferred to Lovvorn School.  During the operation of Liberty, the schoolhouse was used for church services and Sunday school on weekends.  Sources vary on the date the school closed.  One gives the date as 1922 and another says 1925.  The Board of Education sold the building when the school closed and it became Thorne's Schoolhouse Church of Christ.  The church closed in 1938.  The property reverted to the Thorne family in the early 1960's.  The school building was destroyed by fire in the late 1970's.
