The school was originally named Seventh Street School. It became the James Norton School in 1905, named in honor of a member of the Louisville school board. Its name was changed again, circa 1910, to the John Marshall School, named for the famed Chief Justice of the United States. In 1924 the school began to offer a class for mentally handicapped students.
