The original Kennedy School was erected on land donated by Alex R. Kennedy.  The school was an one-room school for ten years until the addition of a second room.  The school was eventually consolidated with Melbourne Heights Elementary and its site reverted to the Kennedy family.  The school building later burned.  In 1955 a new elementary school built across Taylorsville Road was named for Alex Kennedy in recognition of his interest in public education.
