Originally begun as a private school like its founder, Berea College, Lincoln Institute eventually became a state-operated public school in 1947.  Lincoln educated many black students from areas across Kentucky which did not provide high school facilities for African-Americans.  Some Jefferson County residents attended Lincoln prior to integration of JCPS schools in the 1950s.  The property is now a Job Corps facility.  Students seeking their records should contact the state archives.
