The Longfellow Alternative High School opened when another city alternative school, the Talbert Senior High, relocated to the old Longfellow Elementary School building.  Longfellow Alternative existed for a short time after the merger of the city and county schools in 1975.  The dePaul Foundation, a Catholic organization, purchased the building in 1979 and the dePaul School, an alternative Catholic school, is operated there now.
