A new school built on Taylorsville Road in 1955 was named Alex R. Kennedy Elementary School in honor of a man who had donated land for a school in the area in 1881. The previous school operated until 1925.  This school was called Taylorsville Road Elementary School during its construction phase.  Kennedy Elementary was closed in 1981 since its student population had decreased.  The school was used as a book depository and for storage for several years.  Following renovation, it became Alex R. Kennedy Metro Middle School, an alternative school, in 1996. In 2015 the school became an elementary again as the new Alex R. Kennedy Elementary School.
