The opening date for Clifton School is unclear.  When it was named Clifton School versus Vernon Avenue School is unclear as well.  It initially was a county school rather than a city school.  The area may have been absorbed into the city circa 1891, when the school begins to appear in a city directory.  Following its closure, the former school building was converted into small apartments for war workers during World War II.  The building was also used by new churches in the area as they were organized.
