The school was named for the president of Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing Company who died two years before the school was built. It was considered to be in the suburbs in the Highlands area. Belknap's portrait is now in the Archives hanging next to the research room. The school had a garden for many years. The school building was used by Christian Academy for several years in the 1990s. It later became an office building and is now redeveloped as condominiums.
