Archives Closed Schools A-C: Callahan School

Other Name: Indianola School No. 71

Last Address: Mellwood Avenue

Year Opened: 1890s?

Year Closed: 1916

Callahan was a one-room school.  The building was erected by George J. Schureck and rented by the county for $30 a month.  Rosa Phillips Stonestreet, later Jefferson County school superintendent, taught there in 1896-1898.  In 1897 the school was located on Reservoir Avenue.  The Callahan name may have been selected in reference to the area's trustee, Warren Callahan.  It may also have been called Indianola for its location in that subdivision.  Indianola, formerly called Anderson Park, is in the Clifton Heights area.  The school was slightly damaged in a fire in 1912.
