Beechmont School was named for its neighborhood, Beechmont, and the area received its name due to numerous beech trees located there. The site had been the home of two private schools previously, the Allmond's University School for Boys and the University School. The school building became Beechmont Community Center. Beechmont began as a county school and was transferred to the city system in 1922, as its area was annexed to the city. The school operated until the city and county systems were merged in 1975.
