The Ballard School was named for a student who died in 1909 of a ruptured appendix. The school received donated funds from private sources through the Ballard Fund. The school was located in the Florida Heights area. Students were accepted from different areas. Later the county board adopted a resolution in 1949 that students had to attend school in the district where they lived. Students from Harrods Creek School were consolidated into this school. The tenth grade was discontinued in 1945. Ballard School was superseded by Wilder Elementary. Ballard High was named for this previous school. The building is now the Chance School, a private elementary.
