Bruce Middle School was named for James Charles Bruce, the first principal of Durrett High School and a longtime Jefferson County teacher and principal.  Prior to its opening, the school bore the unofficial name Indian Trail Middle School.  Upon its closing, Bruce's students were transferred to Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Middle School.  Liberty High relocated to the Bruce school building.
