Archives Closed Schools A-C: Clay Elementary School

Other Name: Henry Clay School; George F. Simpson School

Last Address: 34th and River Park Drive

Year Opened: 1910

Year Closed: 1971

The school was previously named George F. Simpson School but the name was changed to Henry Clay School because the board adopted a policy that schools could not be named for a living person.  Simpson was a member of the school board.  The building was used for the Clay School for the retarded which opened in 1971 when the Prentice School for the Retarded closed.  The Clay School closed with the opening of Churchill Park School in 1975.  The property was sold to the city of Louisville in 1981.  The building was demolished and a fire station was built on the property.
