Elementary School Archives G-N: Middletown

Official Name: Middletown Elementary School

Year Opened: 1909

The first free public school in the Middletown area was opened in a green two-room frame building on Harrison Avenue in 1909. Earlier private schools in Middletown included a school opened by a Presbyterian minister before 1799, Hope Seminary, opened in 1819, and Jefferson Female Academy, operated from 1855 to 1878. A private day school served the community until the free public school opened on Harrison Avenue. Middletown Elementary moved to a new two-story building on Madison Avenue in 1918. The building on Harrison Avenue was sold. An auditorium was constructed in 1936 and a large eleven-room wing was added in 1954. The building was completely renovated in 1971 and the older section demolished.
