Official Name: Hazelwood Elementary School
Year Opened: 1906
Hazelwood Elementary originally opened as a county school in 1906 in a one-room frame house. It was named for its neighborhood. A two-room frame building was dedicated for the school in October 1907. The school was organized as Hazelwood Graded Common School in 1911. In 1922 the city of Louisville annexed the area served by the school so Hazelwood then became a city school. A new school building was dedicated in 1952 across the street from the old. In 1954 the school's address was established as 1325 Bluegrass Avenue because of addressing changes caused by the construction of the Iroquois Housing Project. Its address had previously been 1314 Bluegrass and 4165 Hazelwood. The old school building was sold by Louisville city schools in 1960. Hazelwood Elementary is located near the former Hazelwood tuberculosis hospital, which later shifted from treating TB patients to serving physically and mentally disabled residents.
