Elementary School Archives G-N: Greenwood

Official Name: Greenwood Elementary School

Year Opened: 1860s

Greenwood School was started by Jack Waller and is one of the oldest schools in the county.  Some accounts say Waller's slaves built a school of homemade bricks.  Other accounts indicate the first building was log.  A second school built in the early 1880's replaced it.  A third building, erected in 1912, was totally destroyed in a tornado in 1925 and classes were temporarily conducted in Dr. Shacklette's home.  A new school built in 1925-1926 was Greenwood's home, until the current school was constructed and opened in 1957.  Greenwood is next door to Pleasure Ridge Park High School.  The old Greenwood building was sold in 1959.  During part of its early history, the school was also called Waller School for its founder.
