Official Name: Hartstern Elementary School
Year Opened: 1969
Hartstern, which opened in 1969, is named for Fred Hartstern, an architect who designed and constructed many schools in the city and county systems. At one time he worked for the Louisville Public Schools. Later, in private practice, he was the sole architect for Jefferson County schools from 1948 to the 1970s. When the local schools were merged and desegregated in 1975, Hartstern was paired with Price Elementary. Price educated students in kindergarten and first and second grades. Hartstern provided classes for the third, fourth, and fifth grades. In 1981 Hartstern was reorganized as an elementary for K through fifth grades.
