Elementary School Archives G-N: Kerrick

Official Name: Kerrick Elementary School

Year Opened: 1876

The Kerrick family donated a lot to the county board of education in 1891 at Dixie Highway and Lower Hunters Trace to succeed schools in the Dixie Highway area and in a Dr. Blanton's home on what is now Welby Road. The previous schools dated to 1876 or earlier. A one-room school operated on the lot donated by the Kerricks until 1911 when it was divided into two rooms. Flooding problems relocated the school to Dixie Highway and Blanton Lane circa 1919. The current building was built in 1959 on twenty-three acres of land on Upper Hunters Trace. Jefferson County Trainable School opened in the old Kerrick school building in 1963. That property at Dixie and Blanton was sold to Exxon Oil Company in 1973.
