Elementary School Archives G-N: Greathouse/Shryock

Official Name: Greathouse/Shryock Elementary

Year Opened: 1980

Greathouse Elementaty School was named for Miss Tommie Greathouse, the first teacher, then a principal of the school.  Formerly a private school which opened in 1877, it became a public school around the time it adopted the Greathouse name in 1912.  In 1888 it was located at the triangle between Shelbyville Road and Frankfort Avenue in St. Matthews.  It moved to Shelbyville Road across from Browns Lane in 1912 when its name became Greathouse.  This location was later sold to the Eline Realty Company when the school moved to Grandview Avenue in 1939.  The Greathouse School was extensively damaged by fire in 1971 and was repaired and renovated.  In 1977 Greathouse became a traditional school.  Greathouse closed two years later.

Shryock Elementary opened in 1957 and was named in honor of famous Kentucky architect Gideon Shryock.

In 1980 Shryock Elementary was renamed Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary School and used the existing Shryock building on Browns Lane.  The last Greathouse school building is now owned by the city of St. Matthews and houses the city hall, police department, and the St. Matthews/Eline branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.
