Official Name: Layne Elementary School

Year Opened: 1969

Layne Elementary, located in Valley Station, opened in 1969. The school is named for Raymond and Rilda Layne. Rilda Layne was a former teacher at Medora Elementary. Raymond Layne was a former teacher at Valley High School and a studio teacher for Jefferson County's educational television science courses. The school was built to relieve overcrowding at Valley and Stonestreet Elementaries. It was known as Mound View Elementary School during its construction phase due to the location's proximity to the Mound View subdivision. Layne is located next to Stuart Middle School.
