Official Name: Hawthorne Elementary School
Year Opened: 1954
Hawthorne opened in 1954 and is named for the neighborhood in which it is located, near Taylorsville Road. A year after its opening, Hawthorne's library was named one of five outstanding in Kentucky. The district began its instructional television (TV) program at Hawthorne. WKPC-TV began broadcasting from Hawthorne in 1957. In 1960 Hawthorne was the first elementary to offer a physical education program.
