Elementary School Archives G-N: King

Official Name: King Elementary School

Year Opened: 1968

King Elementary, originally called West End Elementary during its planning phase, was named for the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. King Elementary was a new educational experiment when it opened as a "School in the Round" with few interior walls. The building was constructed in the shape of a circle, 154 feet in diameter, and is close to Shawnee Park. Before its unique building opened in January 1969, students occupied temporary spaces in Shawnee Elementary, area churches, and the old Finzer School building.
