Official Name: Luhr Elementary School
Year Opened: 1966
Luhr Elementary is named for Mattie B. Luhr, a longtime Jefferson County principal and teacher. Mrs. Luhr was also the daughter of L. J. Stivers, former superintendent of Jefferson County schools. Luhr Elementary opened in Smyrna Elementary in afternoon sessions in the fall of 1966 and occupied its new building in 1967. Luhr was paired with Rangeland Elementary in 1975 as part of the desegregation plan. Kindergarten through the third grade were given at Rangeland and the upper grades were offered at Luhr. In 1981 Luhr resumed grades K through 5.
