The school's namesake, Nicholas Finzer, was a tobacco businessman who led the Night School movement to offer continuing education to his employees and others.  The school was previously named the Third Ward School. It closed circa 1964 and its students went to the new Breckinridge Elementary. The city school district retained the property until 1973, when it was sold to Brody Floor Covering, Inc., which was adjacent to the property.
