The school originally opened as a junior high.  The senior high portion was added to the original building in 1957.  The land originally belonged to the Phillips and Durrett families.  The family home, Newstead, also occupied the site.  JCPS tried to raise money to restore the home and open it as a museum but failed.  Newstead was razed in 1968.  The school became office space initially upon closing; it is now the site of Louisville Male High School.
