The school was originally the 11th Ward school and was renamed Duncan in 1869.  Its location was 17th and Duncan streets in Portland. In 1918 the school began to offer additional special classes for retarded and "atypical" students.  In 1920 the school was renamed Theodore Roosevelt School in honor of the former U. S. President.
