Archives Closed Schools D-F: Fifth Ward School (2)

Other Name: Seventh Ward School; Monsarrat School

Last Address: East side of Fifth Street, south of Broadway, at York Street

Year Opened: 1854

Year Closed: 1865 circa

The original school burned in 1855.  A new building was designed by Henry Whitestone and opened in 1857.  During the Civil War the school was appropriated by the Union Army for use as a hospital.  After the war, redistricting of Louisville's wards changed the name to the Seventh Ward School.
