The school succeeded Eastern Departmental School at 622 Rubel Avenue.  It moved to East Broadway in 1935.  The Broadway building previously housed the Louisville Normal School.  In 1966 the Broadway building became the Elizabeth G. Breckinridge Elementary School.  Elizabeth Breckinridge was a longtime principal of the Louisville Normal School.  Eastern relocated to the former building housing Atherton High on Morton Avenue in 1964 and was then renamed Woerner Junior High in honor of Emma J. Woerner, the first principal of Atherton.
