Eighth Street Colored School was renamed Dunbar School in 1910 in honor of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, a famous poet. The previous address was Eighth and Kentucky streets. The school relocated to its last address in 1916 when Central High vacated the building to move to Ninth and Chestnut.
