The center was named for Jack J. Dawson, school board administrator who died approximately two months before it opened.  He had also served as principal of Eastern High.  The building was used for school offices.  Before its service as administrative offices, the building housed Prestonia Elementary for 42 years until the school moved to a new building in 1970.  The property was sold to FBM Properties in 1987.  The site is now the location of an Aldi food store.
