Eastern Colored School opened in a new building at Jackson and Breckinridge streets in 1874. It, like Central Colored School and Western Colored School, was financed with bond funds. A note in the history folder says board minutes (p. 419) note the approval and opening of the Eastern Colored Evening School. The school was later renamed the Booker T. Washington School in honor of the African American educator because he had once visited the school to inspect its operations.
