Archives Closed Schools D-F: Eighth Street Colored School (Second)

Other Name: Mary B. Talbert School; Eighth Street Colored School (8th Street) (original); Dunbar School

Last Address: 8th and Kentucky Streets

Year Opened: 1918

Year Closed: 1924

This school building previously housed the original school operated under the name Eighth Street Colored School and later Dunbar School. After Dunbar moved to the former Central High School location at 9th and Magazine Streets, this building became an annex for Dunbar in 1916.  City school directories indicate the annex status lasted for one year.  In 1918 the school reopened under the name Eighth Street Colored School. The school was renamed again in 1924, becoming the Mary B. Talbert School for a prominent reformer and activist in anti-lynching and prison reform causes.
