Other Name: Emerson TAPP (Teenage Parent Program), Sylvia Street School, John Hoertz School

Last Address: 1100 Sylvia Avenue, corner of Sylvia and Hickory streets

Year Opened: 1910

Year Closed: 1975

The school, originally named Sylvia Street School, was renamed for school board member John Hoertz in 1908.  In 1910 the school was renamed again, this time for nineteenth century author Ralph Waldo Emerson, since schools could not be named for living persons.  Emerson operated as an elementary from 1910 to 1975, when the TAPP program was located there.  The school closed entirely in 1994.  The building was demolished in 1998.
