During the Civil War, this school was also temporarily converted to a hospital for soldiers, while students were housed nearby in other buildings, including a church. This Fifth Ward school was renamed for George W. Morris, a native of England, who became a Louisville grocer and a longtime member of the school board. Another Fifth Ward School became the Seventh Ward School due to ward redistricting. Dates indicate they may have co-existed.
